Vaillant F.29 Fault: Flame Lost During Operation — Causes & What To Do

F.29 indicates the burner flame was lost while the boiler was running. The boiler detected the flame disappear and locked out for safety. You may get intermittent heating that runs for a while then stops.

The most common causes, in order of how often we see them:

• • Gas supply interruption — a dip or brief loss of gas pressure (or other gas appliances cycling) can blow the flame out faster than the boiler can recover.
• • Frozen or partially blocked condensate — a partly frozen condensate pipe can cause flue issues that extinguish the flame in cold weather.
• • Faulty flame detection electrode — the electrode that confirms the flame can fail intermittently, so the boiler thinks the flame has gone when it hasn't.
• • Flue or draft issue — a strong draft or flue problem can blow the flame out, especially in windy exposed locations.
• • Gas valve dropping out — the gas valve may close intermittently, starving the burner.
• • PCB fault — the control board may fail to sustain the flame signal.

You can reset the boiler and it may run again for a while. But if F.29 keeps recurring, there's an underlying cause — a gas supply issue, condensate blockage, or faulty flame sensor. Repeatedly resetting without fixing the cause risks the boiler locking out more often; book an engineer if it returns.

• • Check other gas appliances — if they're also behaving oddly, the gas supply may be unstable. Contact your gas supplier.
• • Check the condensate pipe outside for freezing in cold weather — thaw gently if frozen, then reset.
• • Check the pressure gauge and repressurise to 1.2 bar if it's low, then reset.
• • Note whether the boiler runs for a set time before cutting out — that pattern helps the engineer diagnose a flame sensor or overheating issue.
• • If F.29 returns after a reset, stop resetting and book a Gas Safe engineer.

The flame electrode, gas valve, and flue connections sit inside or on the boiler casing. Any work inside the casing or on the flue is gas work that must be done by a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

• • Test the flame rectification signal — whether the boiler reliably detects the flame.
• • Inspect and test the flame detection electrode.
• • Check gas supply and pressure at the boiler under operation.
• • Inspect the flue and condensate route for blockages or drafts.
• • Test the gas valve stays open under load.
• • Diagnose the PCB flame signal, replace the faulty part, and re-commission with a combustion check.
