COMMON CAUSES OF A LEAKING TAP
Worn washer or O-ring
The washer or rubber O-ring that seals the valve seat perishes over time — the most common cause of a continuous drip.
Failing ceramic disc / cartridge
Modern mixer and lever taps use ceramic discs that crack or wear, stopping the tap from closing fully.
Excessive water pressure
High system pressure can force water past the seal and cause a persistent drip even when the tap is shut.
Corroded valve seat
Limescale and corrosion on the seat the washer closes against prevent a clean seal and cause a steady leak.

Separate hot and cold taps, each with its own washer and valve. The classic two-tap basin — washer replacement is usually straightforward.
Mixer taps (monoblock)
A single body with a lever or twin handles blending hot and cold. Often cartridge- or ceramic-disc-based; cartridges are replaced as a unit.
Ceramic disc taps
Quarter-turn lever taps using rotating ceramic discs instead of a rubber washer. Discs rarely wear but can crack or trap debris — replaced as a cartridge.
Traditional screw-down taps
Older brass-bodied taps with a jumper valve and washer. Fully serviceable — we re-seat the valve and fit a new washer for a lasting fix.
